The Mystery of Motivation

I am perfectly fine with eating cleanly right now. It's on automatic pilot. It feels good, natural. I don't feel deprived. All is well in Food Land.

I cannot find a lick of motivation to work out, however. None. Life is not easy right now on a personal level.  I am facing some challenges that are bringing me down and rather than rise above them and kick butt, I am letting them overwhelm my day (day after day). This is not good.

How do you get motivated to get up and get going and work out when you feel so blah?

I think the answer is, who cares?  You don't need MOTIVATION. You don't need to WANT to do it.  You don't need to FEEL happy about doing it. You don't need INSPIRATION. You don't need EXCITEMENT.

I think you need to just get up  out of your chair and do it anyway, despite a lack of enthusiasm or energy.

I think once you do it, you feel good about it.

I think once you do it and feel good about it, you get a little less reluctant to do it the next time.

I think once you do it a few times, you start to reap the benefits which then MOTIVATES you to keep going.

So the answer to "How do you get motivated to work out?" may be "WORK OUT." Motivation comes from the RESULTS of the doing.  It doesn't precede the doing!

So what I may need is discipline and commitment to my goals.  Discipline to get up and do it anyway, whether I feel like it or not.  Like most things in my world, the answer always comes down to TAKE ACTION.

Stop thinking, analyzing, and dare I say it....blogging.  Get off my derierre and just do it. And I'll jot down "discipline" as a future blog topic.  Ugh. I think the time has come to tackle that monster, too.

  1. You are describing me!! I think the answer is fake it till you make it!! I'll try if you will??

  2. Fake it till you make it. Okay. DEAL!

  3. It took me a long time to do this. but once I did and keep it going for a month or 3 i now feel bad if I don't. "Just do it" as Nike says and you will keep doing it!

  4. yes indeed! pick one or the other...motivation is fantastic, but lacking that..determination will do.

  5. I agree with fake it till you make it! It works :)

  6. I'm over here by way of Christine. I say find something you love to do, do it 4 weeks in a row, and you will find that you then need to do it and won't want to stop. Instead of machines or something very boring, try a dance fitness class (Zumba, Jazzercise). I know I never would have exercised without it and now I have to stop myself from exercising too much!

  7. Hi Linda and welcome. I have wanted to try Zumba. I have a friend who tried it and got addicted. The treadmill does bore me to tears. The up side is it's right here and works with my schedule (active son to accommodate). I wonder if the Zumba at home DVDs are as good as going to the live classes...hmmmmm...

    1. I'm not sure about Zumba, I do know the Jazzercise ones aren't so great while the classes are great. It is hard to get to set schedule classes, though some have babysitting! It's also very motivating when you make friends and you know they'll worry about where you are if you suddenly stop going! I feel very devoted to my teachers and fellow students. I never thought about any of that when I was sitting at home eating! In the last 7 months (due to my advancing age) I've started yoga and I have to say it's probably the most mobile program you could do. You can do it anywhere and there are great online tutorials. Good luck! I know you'll find something you love!

  8. Great Post :)

Sorry to make you type in the "word verification" but I have been getting a ton of spammers lately. Just type in the word that you see and it should go through.
